Polyethylene Foam (PE)
PE has a diverse application base. With its three most common densities, bright and attractive colors, sometimes it is chosen for its cosmetic appeal rather than its cushioning properties. Multiple crosslink densities are also common. PE is also available in conductive ESD safe material.Low density PE is a semi rigid foam. It is manufactured in 48” x 108” sheets in a wide range of thicknesses. The most common densities and colors used in the packaging industry are 1.2# (mint green), 1.7# (blue) and 2.2# (white). PE foam can be tinted with any desired color as long as some minimum order quantities are met.
PE foam can be hot wire cut into pads and shapes, die cut and band saw cut. It can be laminated by spray adhesive, hot melt or by heat. PE can be hinged. With a wide range of thicknesses available, the flexibility for fabrication and its cosmetic appeal, PE has a diverse application base.
PE is used to cushion heavier products or to register non- fragile products inside a box. Computer CPUs, computer monitors, audio amplifiers for vehicles are typical applications for PE as a cushioning material. Computer accessories like a DVD recorder are an example of a non fragile product that uses PE for registration and minimal cushioning inside a box.
Polyurethane Foam (PU)
PU foam is very diverse and can be used for many different packaging applications. It has excellent cushioning properties and is soft to the touch. Available in conductive ESD safe material.Polyurethane is an open-cell flexible foam. It has a wide range of densities, the common ones used at AFP range from 1.0# to 1.5#. One important characteristic of urethane is that it has low vibration transmission, making it an ideal cushioning foam. It also has a high memory, or bounce-back, so it holds its shape over time. Charcoal is the most common color of urethane, and a pink color indicates that it is anti-static.
Common fabrication methods for urethane are bandsaw cutting (cuts foam down to size), die-cutting (to form various shaped cavities), and convoluting (some customers refer to this as egg crate foam).
There is a wide range of packaging applications for urethane. It is used for cushioning objects such as electronic equipment and other fragile light weight items. Some clients prefer urethane for its appearance in display cases or high-end packages. It is very common to laminate urethane to other packaging materials such as corrugated, other foam, and velvet overlay for appearance.
Expanded Poly Styrene (EPS)
Also known as EPS, this low cost foam is white in color and is ideal for blocking and bracing objects. EPS can be made in anti-static material.EPS is a closed-cell rigid foam which does not absorb water. It comes in three densities: 1.0# (most commonly used), 1.5#, and 2.0#.
Hotwire machinery is used to cut EPS into pads, cavities and various shapes. This machinery is manually operated, making the overall production time-consuming yet precise. We also have a CNC controlled Hotwire EPS cutting machine for intricate cuts.
Because of its characteristics, EPS is great for light cushioning, insulation, and for keeping objects in place during shipment. It can also be laminated to corrugated and other types of foam for innovative designs
